What to expect during dialysis treatment?

As with any major change, adjusting to in-center hemodialysis can take some time. Remember, dialysis treatment is worth it, and your care team will support you every step of the way.

Get used to your new habits

Important steps are taken at every appointment to achieve therapeutic results while ensuring your safety. Become familiar with these steps during each in-center hemodialysis treatment.

Before treatment

  1. Please wash your hands when you arrive at the Renal Center.
  2. Your weight has been checked.
  3. Measure your blood pressure and heart rate.
  4. Your access site has been checked and cleaned. The needle is correctly inserted and secured.
  5. Tubing (blood vessels) are connected to the hemodialysis machine and connected to the needles.
  6. The hemodialysis machine is programmed according to your personal prescription and your treatment begins.

During treatment

  1. We will closely monitor your safety and monitor the effectiveness of your treatment.
  2. Check your blood pressure and heart rate regularly.
  3. You can read, write your journal or listen to music to help you relax.

After treatment

  1. When the treatment is complete, the machine timer will sound.
  2. Measure your blood pressure and heart rate.
  3. The blood returns from the tube (bloodline) into your body and the machine disconnects.
  4. Remove the needle (or disconnect your catheter if you have one) and assess your access site. If you have a fistula or graft, a pressure dressing will be used to prevent bleeding.
  5.  Handwashing.
  6. Your weight has been checked.
  7. You will be discharged from the Renal Center once you feel well and your nurse feels you are stable enough to resume normal activities.
